With my birthday fast approaching, I always find myself reflecting less on what\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0receive and more on what\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been able to give. Over the past few years,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0spent my birthdays volunteering in and around Galveston, and in doing so,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0learned something important about this island community: some of the most important people here are the ones whose names rarely make headlines.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind nearly every successful event, fundraiser, cleanup effort, neighborhood project, school activity, and community gathering are people quietly giving their time, energy, and heart to this island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are the people who show up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long before the chairs are set out for public meetings, before festivals begin, before beaches are cleaned, before food is distributed, before sea turtles are rescued, and before hurricane recovery efforts begin, there are volunteers already hard at work behind the scenes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t have to look very hard to witness just how many people dedicate themselves to caring for this community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the Mayor and City Council members serving the public, to the citizens volunteering on boards and committees, Galveston is filled with people willing to step forward and contribute their time for the betterment of the island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve seen organizations like Artist Boat connecting people to our coastal environment through education and conservation. I\u2019ve seen the work of Turtle Island Restoration Network protecting marine life and preserving our coastal ecosystems. I\u2019ve seen volunteers with the Surfrider Foundation organizing beach cleanups and advocating for clean water and healthy coastlines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve seen groups like Vision Galveston encouraging civic conversation and community engagement, while organizations like Galveston Urban Ministries work tirelessly to support residents facing hardship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve met Chamber Navigators welcoming and encouraging local businesses. I\u2019ve seen volunteers in schools, churches, nonprofits, and neighborhood organizations quietly serving others without expecting recognition in return. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the work happening across this island goes even deeper than many people realize. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are volunteers helping operate sea turtle hotlines. 
There are residents recycling oyster shells to help restore coastal habitats. 
There are people organizing food drives, mentoring children, supporting the arts, helping animals, cleaning beaches, planting dunes, and checking on neighbors after storms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some volunteer publicly. 
Others do it quietly. 
But all of them help hold this community together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s what makes Galveston truly special. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not just the beaches, historic homes, tourism, or sunsets, but the people willing to invest in making this island the best it can be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Galveston works because people care enough to show up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the number of people who truly care for this little piece of earth is far greater than most realize. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strong communities are not built by government alone. They are built by neighbors, volunteers, nonprofits, churches, schools, local organizations, and ordinary people who make acts of service and kindness part of everyday life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve ever wanted to become more connected to this island, consider volunteering with an organization you care about. Every hour matters. Every helping hand matters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
